Jul 12, 2023 · Melissa Aldana is a New York-based Chilean saxophonist who rose to prominence in 2013, when she became the first female jazz musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Aldana was born in 1988 in Santiago, Chile. She started playing sax at the age of 12 and soon began studying with some of the best teachers in Chile.
